Omega 3: What is it?

Omega-3s are polyunsaturated fats that can’t be produced by your cat’s or dog’s body. Meaning Omega 3 must come from the food they eat. Foods rich in omega-3s include marine fish and seeds such as flax seed oil and canola oil. They’re also spectacularly abundant in eggs, mother nature’s incredible and edible source of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids can be thought of having anti-inflammatory properties. But they do much more for the body, including:

Cell membranes: Omega-3s provide structure and support interactions between cells especially in the retina (eye), brain, and sperm cells.

Heart health: Omega-3s can reduce triglycerides, a type of fat in the blood, lowering blood pressure. They can also reduce the risk of developing an irregular heart beat (arrhythmias) and slow the buildup of plaque in arteries.

Brain health: Omega-3s help nourish brain functions and may help prevent or reduce dementia and depression.

Joint health: Omega-3s help reduce joint inflammation including arthritis.

Immunity: Omega-3s boost the immune system to better fight off minor colds and viruses, and even prevent more serious health concerns with age.

Skin and Coat: Lucious, shiny, healthy fur is achieved with the help of Omega 3s. There’s less dander, itching, shedding, and healthier skin with the correct levels of Omega 3 in the diet.

But, they’re delicate. Omega-3 fatty acids are not stable to heat, oxygen, and light during processing, storage, or cooking. When overheated, the fatty acids in omega-3s break down, resulting in a meal with significantly less omega-3 in the food after being cooked or processed.

To get the maximum benefit of the naturally occurring Omega 3s in our Just CatPremium Cat, and Only Dog products, we only use whole, fresh eggs. Not powdered, processed eggs or Omega 3 supplements. Our Gently Cooked products are designed to pasteurize the food but not overheat heat-sensitive nutrients like Omega 3s.

Giving your pet some salmon you made for dinner, while it may taste good, conventional cooking to “human” standards will render it mostly void of valuable Omega 3s and other heat-sensitive nutrients.
